Sounion is a rocky cape, the southernmost point of Attica, about 55 km from Athens. The area, inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC, was of great strategic importance, as it controlled the passage of ships between Athens and the Aegean. On the summit of the cape stands the Classical Temple of Poseidon, god of the sea.
